Free the 303

Ahead of the General Election a campaign to do more for the A 303 has been started by Kevin Davis and Annunziata Rees-Mogg, Prospective Conservative MPs for Yeovil and Somerton and Frome respectively. A campaign website has been set up at http://www.a303.org.uk/ .

For decades there have been plans to do something about what is now becoming an even more crowded and dangerous road. In fact compulsory purchase has already taken place on key strips of land to allow for the dualling and widening of the road. The Conservatives had prioritised the upgrade of the road but when Labour came to power in 1997 John Prescott quickly moved to halt the scheme.

Kevin Davis said: “Somerset people want something done about the A303, not just to improve their own transport links but also because there is a strong sense that many of the users of this road are providing benefit to Devon and Cornwall but not to Somerset.”

The campaign hopes to enlist people across the region to help get a future new government to re-prioritise the A303 as a road being of strategic importance.

Kevin went on: “Government cash is going to be short over the coming years but for the continuing economic viability of Somerset we need to get Government to see the importance of this route and ensure it is pushed to the top of the list for funding. Both Annunziata and I have been in discussions with the Shadow Secretary of State for transport and whilst we cannot expect to get a cash commitment yet we are having a much more constructive dialogue than before.”
